I’m Michelle L. Nielsen.
After nearly 23 years of working in the newspaper advertising design field, I made the jump to begin freelance design, and to explore other creative outlets - acting, writing, music.
I’ve got a bit of a varied background. At 17, I joined the US Army, where I served as the motor pool & unit supply clerk as well as the armorer. After that, I went on to college for vocal performance and musical theatre. During that time, I interned at a recording studio where I was first introduced to the magic that is desktop publishing (of course, that was on PageMaker). From that point forward, it became clear that design would be my career. I’ve since mastered programs like Multi-Ad Creator (some old school designers may remember that one), QuarkXpress, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, and even Excel.
I’ve designed, developed and worked on every style of ad possible - from the most aggressive discount store clearance ad loaded with bursts and coupons to the sleekest high-end luxury magazine ad with beautiful photos and minimal copy. That development occasionally included writing & editing headline & body copy.
For the majority of my career, I managed a team of artists & proofreaders. One of my greatest joys was working with those artists to develop designs that ultimately became better than either of our expectations.
Whether you are looking for a design or looking to learn, I hope that you will allow me to create that same joy for you.
